PROCAJA (La Asociación para el Desarrollo de las Cajas Rurales) has provided microloans in four rural provinces of western Panama since 1996. Despite Panama’s well-developed financial sector, there are still significant levels of poverty, especially in rural areas. PROCAJA is one of the very few microfinance institutions focused on serving rural borrowers in Panama. All of PROCAJA’s borrowers live in rural areas and over 30% of the portfolio is lent for agriculture. PROCAJA provides financial services adaptable to the conditions and characteristics of Panama’s rural residents, allowing changes according to the needs of the applicants and the experience gained as an institution.
