Kigarama is a Savings and Credit Society (SACCO) that was founded in 2005 in Masheruka Sub-County, Sheema, southwest Uganda. Kigarama’s mission is to provide financial and business services to empower its members, especially the rural active poor. Kigarama provides loan and savings products as well as financial training. Kigarama is a unique organization as its efforts include helping its members identify potential business opportunities with a focus on value added loans in agriculture production. Kigarama operates two branches that allow it to reach over 1,000 active borrowers across twelve districts in southwest Uganda. As a SACCO, Kigarama is member-based, and all members are owners. Approximately, 42% of Kigarama’s borrowers are considered rural and 33% of total borrowers are female. The organization is actively focused on increasing the number of female borrowers in its portfolio and aims to do this by introducing various loan programs targeting women entrepreneurs.
